Frequently Asked Questions
Your guide to understanding the basics of Fantasy Premier League.
A Gameweek is the FPL term for a round of Premier League fixtures. Most Gameweeks consist of 10 matches played over a weekend, but they can sometimes be spread over several days. Your team's points are calculated based on player performances within that single Gameweek.
The Wildcard is a powerful chip that allows you to make unlimited free transfers for a single Gameweek. You get two Wildcards per season: one for the first half (before the winter deadline) and one for the second half. It's best used to overhaul your squad due to injuries, suspensions, or to target a major shift in fixture difficulty or a big Double Gameweek.
A Double Gameweek occurs when one or more teams play two matches within a single Gameweek. This usually happens when fixtures are rescheduled. DGWs are massive opportunities in FPL, as players from those teams can earn points from two games, making them prime targets for transfers and captaincy.
Preparation is key. Plan your transfers several weeks in advance to bring in players who have a DGW without taking too many point hits. Saving your chips like the Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, or Triple Captain for a DGW is a very popular and effective strategy to maximize your score.
A Blank Gameweek is the opposite of a Double Gameweek. It occurs when one or more teams do not have a fixture in that Gameweek, usually due to clashes with cup competitions. This means any players you own from those teams will score zero points. Navigating BGWs requires careful planning to ensure you can field a full starting XI.
The Free Hit chip allows you to make unlimited transfers for a single Gameweek, but your squad reverts back to how it was before you played the chip for the following Gameweek. It's perfect for navigating a big Blank Gameweek where many of your players don't have a fixture, or for attacking a small Double Gameweek without disrupting your long-term team structure.
The key difference is duration. A Wildcard makes permanent changes to your squad for the rest of the season. A Free Hit makes temporary changes for just one Gameweek. After the Gameweek ends, your original squad is restored.
The Bench Boost chip allows the points scored by your four substitute players to be added to your total score for that Gameweek. This is best used during a Double Gameweek, where you can have a squad of 15 players all playing twice, maximizing your potential score.
The Triple Captain chip triples the score of your captain for one Gameweek, instead of the usual double. Like the Bench Boost, this is most effective when used on a premium player during a Double Gameweek, giving them two opportunities to score big.
No. You can only use one chip per Gameweek. For example, you cannot use your Wildcard and your Bench Boost in the same week. However, you can use your Wildcard in one week to prepare your team for a Bench Boost in the following week.
